The Depth of Perception

A friendly acquaintance judges the surface, all that you superficially appear to be.

A new friend looks for aspects of you, things to relate to, to further and understanding of you.

A romance finds attractions—things you do for them, that they’ll do for you, and a potential gain. But a compromise (in avoidance of heartbreak) could be on an inevitable horizon.

A true friend sees you for you, aims to challenge you, to listen to you, and to love you for all of who you truly are.

A new foe notices aspects of you, things they dislike, to further a disliking of you.

A rival thrives off competition—things you do well, that they hope to do better than you, all for a potential ego boost. But compromise (in avoidance of failure) could be on an inevitable horizon.

A true nemesis sees you for you, aims to challenge you, to listen to you and to loath you for all of who you truly are.
